Lee Carsley has challenged Harvey Elliott to win a promotion to the England senior squad ahead of next summer’s European Championships in Germany.

The Liverpool midfielder was a squad player for England Under-21s as they won their own corresponding Euros this summer

Elliott has three goals and two assists from his last three international appearances.

Carsley has revealed Elliott’s reaction to not getting such a call-up himself, before declaring ‘the ball is in his court’ to earn senior selection.

“He’s reacted great. The Euros is in the summer, there’s still a massive part of the season left,”

“The ball is massively in their (his Under-21s players) court. Their club form will take care of selection.

“If you’re playing week in, week out in the Premier League - We keep getting all the surveys back saying there aren’t enough English-born players in the Premier League – so if you’re playing then you’re in line for selection.”

Elliott has made 16 appearances for Liverpool so far this season

Elliott has six goals and four assists for the club from 82 outings since being handed his debut back in 2019.

Reflecting on his use of the Reds’ midfielder, Carsley admitted Elliott is granted a more advanced role for England Under-21s

Carsley adds

We maybe ask him to play a different role for us, maybe a little bit higher,”

“Harvey is a player with outstanding potential.

"We have to make sure that when he is on camp, we can’t guarantee him minutes at Liverpool but I can guarantee him minutes here and be an important part of what we do."

“All of the stats and data that come back on Harvey is that he is definitely our most creative player in terms of creating chances and scoring goals. That’s good for him but he knows he has to keep doing that. That’s going to be a big part of his game.”
