Gary Neville has claimed Liverpool fans no longer support the club in the manner for which they were once celebrated after turning on head coach Arne Slot.

The Reds have suffered a difficult campaign in defence of the record-equalling 20th championship they won in dominant fashion during Slot's first season in charge last year having assumed the onerous task of replacing Jurgen Klopp in the hotseat.

While there have been occasional grumbles of discontent in the stands at Anfield, the brunt of the criticism of Slot has come from social media and notable professional supporters on fan channels and websites

The most vehement opponents to the Dutchman are eager for him to become the first Liverpool boss in history to be sacked after leading them to the title.

that has prompted a bewildered Neville, the former Manchester United defender who is now a Sky Sports pundit, to question the loyalty of the Reds fanbase.

“What has happened to Liverpool fans?" he said. "Because honestly, no word of a lie, I always thought Liverpool fans held their manager as number one.

"(Jamie) Carragher has always told me: win the league and they'll turn on the players before the manager. I can hear Carra saying it 20 times in the last 15 years. Suddenly - what has happened?”

Despite the disappointing season, Liverpool can move into the top three ahead of Manchester United with victory over their bitter North West rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

And speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Neville said: “This game on Sunday - against United - which is historically probably the greatest Premier League fixture.

"It just feels a bit like, on Sunday, it is bigger for Slot and Michael Carrick than it is for the fans. I don't think Michael could afford a bad defeat on Sunday. Is it about the managers on Sunday a little bit?”
