Diogo Jota explains thinking behind Liverpool ‘new idea’ under Jurgen Klopp

If there's one player in the Liverpool front line who will have no qualms coping with the intense competition for places, it's Diogo Jota.

That Jota, despite two lengthy injury setbacks last season, will hope to make his 125th appearance when Jurgen Klopp's side entertain Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday underlines how he has successfully forged his own reputation at Anfield.

With Salah still locking down the right wing, Jota is vying with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez for a place down the centre of the attack, with Luis Diaz also offering competition to the trio for the left-wing berth.

After moving on to five goals in 11 appearances this season with the opener in Thursday's 5-1 Europa League stroll at home to Toulouse, Jota is content with his form

Jota:

"So far, so good," he says. "I think I have a lot of goals already from the amount of time I play. So that is what I can do. And whenever I am on the pitch, I try to do the best I can do.

"When I first came here, everyone talked about the best trio in the world. But everyone is different. Obviously, we have a lot of variety now.

"That is helpful and everyone is scoring, which makes life harder for the opponents. In the end that is what we want - to win games.

"Honestly, having people that can score goals is helpful because at the end that is the target of the game.

"We have a lot and particularly this season we have midfielders also scoring and it is important because it gives us the chance to create and score from every part of the pitch. And life is easier in the end when you score goals."

Jota has now scored 12 times in his last 20 appearances for Liverpool - second only to Salah during the same period

Jota adds

"Obviously people are expecting us to win all the time and especially these kind of games and we as professionals have to prove that on the pitch. That is the hardest part but I believe here at Anfield we can win the match."

"I think we have developed a lot as a team and we are focused now on this, let’s say, new idea.

"Obviously the midfield being a lot different, we kind of have a different play style, that suits us to play against a lower block and more defensive teams.

"And it’s getting better, the results are the most important thing and we are doing things right until now and we want to continue in that way."
