'Why would he coach that?' - Jamie Carragher plans to ask Arne Slot about Liverpool tactical change he can't work out

Jamie Carragher has revealed he plans to ask new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot about a tactic that was on display during Saturday's 2-0 win at Ipswich Town

The Reds won the opening game of the new Premier League side thanks to second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

In the first half of Saturday's game at Portman Road, though, Carragher noticed how defender Andy Robertson moved into a central position to receive the ball from Virgil van Dijk

Usually, the Scotsman would take up position high and wide on the left flank.

Carragher and Gary Neville were left bemused by the tactic that was used by Slot

Carragher said;

"I think the natural thing here as the ball is going round the back considering Ipswich are playing with a front four to press, would be Andy Robertson to come here maybe to receive the ball, as I did when I played full-back and Gary did for most of his career.

"But what's really interesting is to watch where he goes to receive the ball and help Virgil van Dijk.

“So again, things I've never really seen before; going around the back of him but hopefully we'll understand why at some stage."

Neville added:

"I marvel at what these players do. But I always think what is the benefit that you're trying to look for there?

"You've got Alisson who is there and can do the exact same job.

“Why would Arne Slot coach Robertson to run behind Van Dijk into the space where Alisson can do that job, what advantage has he seen there for his team?"

Carragher responded:

"Listen, as I said, this is new to us. I'll ask Arne Slot, hopefully I'm interviewing him before next weekend's game against Brentford!

"But he definitely likes to use the centre of the pitch, not just with the defenders but also with his midfield players.

“He's always got numbers centrally. Is it keeping the ball there? I'm not sure, hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it."
