Steven Gerrard reaches out to Liverpool and shows true colours with Arne Slot wish

Steven Gerrard has made it clear he would return to Liverpool to fulfil any job - and lent his backing to Arne Slot.

When the former Reds captain took up the reins at Aston Villa in November 2021, it felt inevitable he would one day return to Anfield as the club's manager.

A difficult spell at Villa was quickly followed by 18-months in charge of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, who he left in January.

He is yet to return to management, despite being strongly linked with an emotional return to Rangers, who he won the Scottish Premiership title without losing a game in the 2020-21 campaign.

The 45-year-old has been doing a lot of punditry work in his time away from the dugout. In a recent interview, he was asked if he dreams of managing the Reds.

In comments exclusive to the Liverpool ECHO, Gerrard told TNT Sports’ 'Ally’s Social Club',

Gerrard said: “I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything."

However, Gerrard also showed his class by clarifying he does not want Arne Slot, who has been under pressure for several weeks, to be relieved of his duties. The ex-England captain

Gerrard said: "I don’t want the Arne Slot to lose his job.

"I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.

"I’m a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool. But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them."

Liverpool's form has been turning round. The 2-1 away victory over Tottenham was the Reds' third win in five matches and a result which lifted them to fifth position, albeit with Manchester United still to play Aston Villa.

Gerrard opened up about his spell managing Villa, which ended in October 2022 after a 3-0 defeat by Fulham left them languishing just above the relegation zone.

Looking back at what went wrong,

Gerrard said: "Going into the second season, I’m thinking: 'We’ve taken Villa from 17th to seventh, eighth, ninth. We’re in a good place.

“We’ve made three or four really strong signings. Let’s go for top ten, maybe have a go at the League Cup. If Europe happens, brilliant.'

"We started the season really badly. We lost 2–0 to Bournemouth. We were poor — tactically poor, players didn’t turn up — and it was a shock result.

"We bounced back against Everton, won 1–0, steadied it a bit. But when we lost momentum towards the end of October, I didn’t feel like I could pull it back.

"I felt like I’d changed the dynamics and upset too many people in the dressing room too quickly, and that hurt me a lot."
