Roy Hodgson will 'always remember' Jamie Carragher's parting message after Liverpool sacking

Roy Hodgson says he'll always remember what Jamie Carragher told him after he was sacked as Liverpool manager in January 2011.

Hodgson was appointed as Reds boss in the summer of 2010.

Hopes high that he would be the 'safe pair of hands' to lead the Reds back towards the summit of the Premier League table after a seventh placed finish under Rafael Benitez led to the Spanish boss losing his job amid a backdrop of ownership issues.

However, after a series of missteps from the start, Hodgson oversaw a dismal period in charge of the Reds.

Liverpool won just 13 of his 31 matches in all competitions, spending several weeks in the Premier League relegation zone.

The Reds won just one of Hodgson's first eight Premier League matches in charge, losing at Old Trafford and Goodison Park as well as at home to Blackpool.

While they did progress in the Europa League, where six of Hodgson's 13 wins were achieved, they also lost at home to Northampton Town in the League Cup.

One of the worst Liverpool managerial reigns ever was ended when the Reds lost 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in the first week of January 2011, and Hodgson has been recalling for former Reds vice-captain Carragher said to him after the news broke.

"I always remember what Carragher said to me when I was leaving,”

“He came in, he and Steven had come in to say goodbye and wish me luck and wish me well.

“And Carragher said, ‘I’ve got to say, the big mistake you made was trying to coach us.’

“He said, ‘You know, we’ve had four years of coaching.’ Probably the mistake you made, you’ve come in and you’ve prolonged that. You’ve also wanted to put us right on the field.'”

Hodgson didn't elaborate on what Carragher meant, with the now 78-year-old moving on to West Brom before four years in charge of England which featured a group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup and a second round loss to Iceland at Euro 2016.
