The Premier League have explained their decision to award Liverpool a penalty against AFC Bournemouth.

Cody Gakpo was deemed to have been fouled during the first half of the game.

The Dutchman latched on to a long pass forward from Andy Robertson, only for a touch from Lewis Cook to send him tumbling to the ground

After initially awarding the penalty, the on-field decision was backed up by VAR.

On X, the Premier League Match Centre posted the following statement:

"The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed to have been a trip by Cook on Gakpo. The VAR also confirmed Gakpo was onside in the build-up."

Mohamed Salah then stepped up to convert the penalty and put the Reds 1-0 up.

The home supporters were unhappy with the decision from the officials and they were even more frustrated soon after David Brooks saw a goal ruled out for a narrow offside decision.

The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Kerkez in an offside position in the build-up," said the Premier League Match Centre account.

The Reds will go nine points clear at the top of the table if they can see the win out on the south coast, with nearest challengers Arsenal in action against Manchester City on Sunday.
