Premier League release statement after Liverpool penalty overruled by VAR

The Premier League have explained the decision to chalk off a second Liverpool penalty in the clash with Chelsea

A foul was initially awarded by the referee before VAR sent the official to the monitor.

John Brooks then decided to change his decision, with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez initially deemed to have fouled Reds midfielder Curtis Jones.

A post on the Premier League Match Centre X account provided detail behind the penalty being overturned: "The referee awarded a penalty to Liverpool for a foul by Sanchez on Jones.

Statement

"The VAR deemed that Sanchez won the ball and no foul was committed and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

Liverpool had already been awarded one penalty in the game, with Levi Colwill clearly bringing down Jones in the area

Mohamed Salah, who had an earlier appeal turned down too, converted.

At the other end, Chelsea also thought they should've been awarded a penalty after a challenge from Trent Alexander-Arnold on Jadon Sancho. However, VAR decided not to intervene.
