Mohamed Salah promise quietly made as Liverpool given evidence of big 2024 decision

If the theory that Saturday's Merseyside derby was not Mohamed Salah at his very best, his match-winning contributions were still testament to his enduring brilliance.

Salah, by his own peerless standards, was generally below par for much of the 243rd meeting with Everton but it was still another game where the Egypt captain came away with the headlines

His second-half penalty to open the scoring was the 200th league strike of the 31-year-old's career before his stoppage-time winner became his 29th goal involvement in just 24 games

Virgil van Dijk on Salah's all-round performance

"Funnily enough, you can also praise Vitaliy Mykolenko,"

"I don’t think it’s just Salah was not at his best. I think he played against a player who did very well. But on the other side, he still scored two goals and that’s what we need and that’s the greatness we need. I think [he's] very much a great."

For all the excitement around a reconfigured midfield, the blistering potential of an in-form Darwin Nunez and the mouth-watering prospect of a fully-fit Luis Diaz, it is Salah whose presence in this emerging Liverpool team gives them greatest cause for optimism

Klopp

"What I love most about Mo is that Mo Salah played for us an incredible amount of fantastic games,"

"it was not his best game but we need someone who can score and he does that again and I couldn’t respect that fact more. The numbers are crazy so that is his nature and really cool."

In a rare break from tradition, Salah, through a beaming smile, told reporters gathered inside Anfield on Saturday afternoon that he would finally stop to chat for a post-match interview at the end of the season.
