Michael Edwards to Saudi Arabia truth after claim Liverpool and FSG chief 'agreed' deal

Recent reports claiming that Liverpool’s football chief Michael Edwards has agreed to join a club in Saudi Arabia are understood to be wide of the mark.

Edwards, currently in his second spell at Anfield, has reportedly agreed to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

According to recent claims in Saudi Arabia, Edwards has verbally accepted an offer made by the club last month and is expected to sign the paperwork to become Al-Hilal’s next sporting director.

FSG brought Edwards back to Liverpool last year, appointing him as their chief executive of football.

He had previously spent 11 years at the club between 2011 and 2022, holding key roles including chief analyst, technical director, and eventually sporting director.

Al-Hilal, arguably the most prominent club in Saudi Arabia, is keen to boost its global profile. Bringing in Edwards, one of soccer's most respected sporting directors, would be a major step toward achieving that goal.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has taken to X claiming that while Edwards has recently spoken to Al-Hilal, it has only been due to its interest in Darwin Nunez, describing the reports as "wide of the mark."

It's claimed there's been no formal offer or meeting to bring Edwards to Saudi Arabia, but Al-Hilal is interested in landing Liverpool's top soccer boss. Edwards is believed to be more closely attached to Al-Ittihad, another top Saudi Pro League outfit.

During his two spells at Anfield, Edwards has helped Liverpool secure nine trophies, including two league titles, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup. His experience managing key transitions at the club is what made him Al-Hilal’s top target.

However, Edwards is reportedly content with Fenway Sports Group, and his departure would come as a surprise.
