Luis Suarez has hailed Darwin Nunez's mentality after the forward hit back at his critics following his performance in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old Uruguay regular was introduced as a second-half substitute at Villa Park as the Reds haggled for a winner against Unai Emery's side.

Nunez quickly made the headlines for all the wrong reasons as he missed a glaring opportunity to put his side 3-2 up after Dominik Szoboszlai's through-ball handed the Uruguayan an open goal.

Despite the point extending Liverpool's lead at the Premier League summit to eight points, Nunez quickly found himself on the end of a barrage of criticism following the game.

Nunez, though, hit back at the criticism on Thursday morning on X, as he insisted he would 'give it my all until the last day I'm here in Liverpool'.

Now, though, Nunez's former Uruguay team-mate Suarez has hailed his response to the criticism and urged the forward to keep working.

Replying to Nunez's post on X, Suarez said: "Of course, GOAL-SCORER, that's how I love you! That's the attitude, always positive. Let's go up!"

Asked about Nunez's performance at Villa Park on Wednesday night, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said:

"I can accept every miss, especially from a player who scored two very important goals away at Brentford and that scored for us in the home game against Villa [in November]. I would prefer him to score but the word 'chance' says it all.”

"It is a chance. It is not 100 per cent that it goes in the goal.

"I can accept misses, but what is harder for me to accept is his behaviour after the chance. It got too much in his head, he was not the usual Darwin who works his socks off and makes sure he helps the team.

"He was too disappointed that he missed that chance. Maybe we will never know, but maybe that is why he was just a fraction short the moment afterwards."
