Florian Wirtz came under fire from Fulham supporters during Liverpool’s visit to Craven Cottage, enduring a harsh chant aimed at him.

Fulham supporters were heard chanting "what a waste of money” during the first half of the game where Harry Wilson put Marco Silva's ahead with an expert finish into the bottom corner.

While the on-field decision initially flagged the strike as offside, VAR overturned it, confirming the goal stood after ruling that Virgil van Dijk had not interfered with play.

Wirtz responded to the criticism in the second half after a well-worked equalizer.

Conor Bradley was instrumental bursting forward after Fulham lost possession in midfield. His driving run drew multiple defenders before he released Wirtz, who calmly lifted the ball over Bernd Leno.

Liverpool began the second half on the front foot, with Cody Gakpo seeing a goal ruled out for offside before Wirtz was initially denied in similar fashion just before the hour.

The decision appeared marginal on first viewing, with replays offering little clarity on which way the call would go.

However, following an extended VAR review, Wirtz’s effort was eventually given to restore parity.

With confusion among both sets of supporters, the Premier League later provided clarification.

The division's official 'Match Centre' account on X shared a brief explanation along with an illustrative video, outlining why Wirtz was deemed to be onside in the build-up to the goal.

The message read: "VAR checked the referee's call of no goal - and established that Wirtz was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded."

Aside from Wirtz, Liverpool lacked cutting edge in the final third and found clear chances hard to come by, despite looking relatively solid defensively.

That changed late on, with Gakpo and then Harrison Reed finding the net in stoppage time.

Arne Slot continues to search for the right balance, hampered by limited attacking options, but was dealt another blow when Reed was afforded space 30 yards from goal, took a touch unchallenged and beat Alisson from a tight angle.

Alan Smith, a two-time top-flight title winner with Arsenal, highlighted Slot’s limited options on the bench while providing commentary on the match for Sky Sports.

"Arne Slot has a bit of work to do at half-time," said Smith just before the interval. "He doesn't have many obvious options, but something has to change."

After Wirtz's equalizer, he added: "Liverpool have attacked more quickly in this half and been more aggressive. It was a simple enough finish, but the most important thing was that he got in there."
