When Alexis Mac Allister was asked which player he would like to see Liverpool sign this summer, few would have predicted the answer to be a defender who finished 17th in the league this season.
Cristian Romero may distance himself from much of Tottenham Hotspur ’s shortcomings and point to the fact that he featured in less than half of the team’s Premier League matches during 2024/25, but his selection by Mac Allister was certainly something of a curveball.
Mac Allister
"Oh, Cuti (Romero),"
when asked to choose one player he’d like Liverpool to add to its roster. "He's a player I love.
“The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he's too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence.
“For me, he's been the best center-back in the world for several years.”
But Mac Allister’s decision may not have been so surprising in Argentina, where Romero’s stock is evidently higher.
The Spurs man played an integral role in his country’s three international successes between 2021 and 2024, featuring in all seven games at the World Cup in Qatar.
It’s not just Mac Allister who feels Romero is an outstanding talent; so does the man considered by many to be world soccer’s greatest-ever player.
In 2023, following a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador in which Romero was voted player of the match, Lionel Messi claimed the center-back was the “best defender in the world”.
Given the quality Messi has played alongside in his career, that’s high praise indeed.
Romero apologists may also point to the fact that Tottenham sat seventh in November before his injury woes limited him to just three more 90-minute showings in the Premier League.
Likewise, the Argentine’s return to the team in March resulted in an uplift in Spurs’ defensive displays in the Europa League.
All of that still makes a move to Anfiled unlikely.
He would likely cost a significant fee to prise from the London club, and while Liverpool was in the market for Dean Huijsen earlier this summer, center-back does not seem to be a priority position.
Virgil van Dijk has committed his future to the Reds, Ibrahima Konate was one of the league’s most consistent defenders this season, and Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are reliable deputies.
Should either leave, the picture could change, but for now, no matter how many sympathizers Romero has, don’t expect to see him in a red shirt soon.
