Kevin De Bruyne has already been highly complimentary of Liverpool and Anfield, amid speculation linking the Manchester City midfielder with a high-profile switch to the Premier League champions.

De Bruyne, 33, is available on a free transfer this summer as the Belgium international calls time on a glittering career at City.

The former Wolsfburg star is a modern great for Liverpool’s rivals having helped lead them to six league titles and a Champions League triumph.

De Bruyne is reportedly confident he can maintain his performance at the top level and reports emerged on Wednesday linking him with a potential move to Anfield.

While the ECHO understands that Liverpool are not among the clubs to have approached De Bruyne’s representatives - as has been claimed - the player has previously let his Reds allegiances be known.

There is a well-known video of an 11-year-old De Bruyne stating that Liverpool are his favourite club and Michael Owen is his favourite player. "I would love to play there one day,"

De Bruyne hasn't since explicitly said he still wants to play for Liverpool, but he hasn't hidden his respect for the club over the years.

In November 2019, before a Liverpool-City clash at Anfield, De Bruyne was full of praise for the renowned Anfield atmosphere generated by Liverpool's fans

De Bruyne commented.

"I like Anfield, I like it a lot,"

"I love people being on you, being noisy, that is what it's all about. I love the passion of football. Lately, a lot of new things have been introduced in football, but I still love things how they were in the old days - people shout and get their team forward."

De Bruyne added:

"When Liverpool get that atmosphere, it gives them a nudge and for the other team, it gives a feeling of nervousness.

“As a team, you need to stay calm. That's probably the most difficult and the most important thing. If you get nervous and anxious, they smell it. It's kill or be killed at that time."

He also discussed his close relationship with then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, saying:

"Me and Klopp have a good relationship, he wanted me at Dortmund at a time... I think I admire him, and he admires me so every time we see each other is always in a good note."

De Bruyne expressed admiration for Liverpool's team during the 2021-22 title race, describing them as "great":

"I feel like there are two teams fighting each other so much and both know what it takes to keep pushing and pushing and we are the only teams to have done that for the last five years."
