Jude Bellingham feels the Liverpool supporters who booed Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfieldwere just "doing the fans' job" as the former Red endured a miserable return to Merseyside.

Alexander-Arnold was roundly jeered after he appeared as an 81st minute substitute at his former home, as his new club slipped to their first Champions League defeat of the season

Alexis Mac Allister headed home the game's only goal following a free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai, with Bellingham having conceded the foul after tripping Ryan Gravenberch

Alexander-Arnold's late introduction failed to rouse his new side, who lost at Anfield for the second successive Champions League campaign, with Mac Allister having also scored in last season's 2-0 success for the Reds.

Asked about the booing by Amazon Prime Video, Bellingham said: "I heard it. It's one of those things in football.

“The fans booing isn't a reflection of how they feel about him. They are trying to give their team the edge, and throw him off a bit.”

“I'm sure they appreciate what he did for the club. Obviously he loves the club a lot, I know that from speaking to him. It's one of those things that can happen in football."

Bellingham was then asked whether he feels Reds fans' thoughts on Alexander-Arnold will soften over time.

"Perhaps so,"

"When he won the league, and last season, they gave him a good send-off from what I saw. They were doing the fans' job, I suppose."

The England international also conceded that Liverpool were worthy winners, adding: "The scoreline reflects the game, they edged it.

"Second half, they brought more. They were dangerous from set-pieces and we didn't defend them well.

“First half we were good, we created good openings. But in the second half their momentum edged it.

"It felt like we wanted to force things too much. We gave the ball away too much towards the end. It's still really early in the Champions League campaign and we were worse off last season."
