Jamie Carragher solves Trent Alexander-Arnold contract dilemma with 'final word of advice'

Jamie Carragher's latest guidance to Trent Alexander-Arnold is make sure he signs a new contract with Liverpool.

The former vice-captain warns the current one that he will be 'up for a lot of criticism' if he does not, offering a simple solution to make sure both sides get what they want.

It is still the case that Alexander-Arnold has not renewed terms with Liverpool beyond the end of the current campaign.

Alongside intense rumours surrounding interest from Real Madrid, little has been said on his situation compared to that of Mohamed Salah's, for example.

"I want to be a Liverpool player this season [as a minimum] is what I will say," he explained back in September.

"I have always said I want to captain the club, that is an aim of mine and a goal of mine, [but] whether that happens is out of my hands.”

"Look, I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public. And this one won’t be either."

Carragher said

"Trent should be loved no matter what happens, but he will be respected more than loved if he leaves this summer. Local players get treated differently to overseas stars. It is just how it is,"

Carragher responded to that matter in a Q&A forum for The Telegraph.

But if the full-back was hoping for any public messages begging him to renew, the former defender had another message.

Carragher

"Put it this way, I’m not sure you will get a banner on the Kop saying, 'give Trent whatever dough he wants' any time soon,"

Carragher added. "With the local lads it always seems to be more like: 'You’re playing for Liverpool so what more do you want?'

"Trent will get a lot of criticism if he leaves on a free because he is valued at around £90 million, but there will be more acceptance if Salah and Van Dijk go on a Bosman even though one cost £40 million and the other £75 million.

“Trent cost no transfer fee, so he would leave for the same price."

Offering a final word of advice, Carragher believes he has come up with a solution that will get the best out of the situation for both club and player.

Carragher concluded: "If I could offer my advice to Trent it would be to sign a deal and get yourself a realistic buy-out clause so the option is there if the chance of a move comes around again.

“That way, if Real still fancy it, Liverpool could get a few quid and Trent will always be remembered as Liverpool’s greatest right-back."
