Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool has dodged transfer bullet after Marc Guehi decision

This summer's transfer window has been lacking in genuine sagas, but Marc Guehi's future has been on the agenda in the weeks since he shone in defence for England at Euro 2024.

The Crystal Palace center-back was excellent for the Three Lions as they came up short in Germany, prompting interest in his services from several top-flight clubs.

Liverpool and Newcastle are the two clubs that have been linked with Guehi the most, and it seemed as though the North East club was the most likely to sign him.

The Magpies have had four bids for Guehi rejected by Palace, the latest of which was worth £65million ($86m), with Palace said to be holding out for a fee of around £70million ($93m) for the 24-year-old

By contrast, Liverpool's interest in Guehi appears to have cooled as the transfer deadline approaches, and if Jamie Carragher's comments are anything to go by, that's a good thing - as he doesn't believe the player is worth what Palace are asking for.

Carragher

“It’s just interesting what’s going to happen in the next few days with Guehi and Crystal Palace,”

“I mean, Guehi, we are talking about £70 million. I think he is a really good player.

“I wouldn’t pay £70 million for him, though, so I think that’s probably a big decision the club have got to make, whether they look somewhere else and someone cheaper because that is top dollar, that.”

If Newcastle doesn't end up signing Guehi, it could have a knock-on effect on Liverpool, with reports last week suggesting Eddie Howe could turn to Liverpool defender Joe Gomez as an alternative target.

Alternatively, if Newcastle do sign Guehi, Palace could swoop for Gomez to replace its captain.
