I thought Jurgen Klopp had thrown in the towel against Chelsea - he made a Liverpool decision no-one else would

John Aldridge

Every team wants to win that cup. City, United, they all do, take it from me. And Liverpool have won it!

It’s another trophy and we’re now a couple ahead of Man United. The manner in which they did was quite incredible to be honest, when you’ve got virtually a full team out.

We put Chelsea in their place with youngsters.

The manner of the win is right up there. It’s not like winning the European Cup. You can’t put it in that bracket, with Istanbul. But as major finals go at Wembley, the manner of it makes sure it’s up there with the very best.

The team that finished that game, surely it must be the youngest ever average age for a side to pick up a trophy at Wembley.

I don’t know for sure, but it has to be close when you look at the age of the players that were left on that pitch. If you know the answer, please get in touch and let me know!

I thought Jurgen had thrown in the towel - how wrong was I?

Aldridge continued

I know Jurgen perhaps had no other options other than doing what he did when picking that team.

But I’ve spoken to other former players at the game, and none of us would have done what Jurgen did.

We would have just kept the older, experienced players on the pitch for as long as you can. But the trust he has in those kids, to put them on, and they delivered for him is amazing!

"I actually thought we’d thrown in the towel a bit. That it would take some doing now to get through this game and win it. But how wrong was I?! To win it with that team is tremendous.

When you’ve got a lot of inexperienced players in your team, your two centre-backs and holding midfielder in particular have to deliver. Van Dijk, Konate and Endo certainly did that.

Endo has fitted in like a glove. He’s been ridiculously brilliant. One of the papers actually gave him a 6/10. What game were they watching?

The shift he put in was astounding.

He was up against a player who cost £110m and made it look like those price-tags were the other way around. That he was the £110m player himself, up against a £17m player. He was awesome.

But the two centre-backs and the goalkeeper were amazing. Wow. They are the reason we got the clean sheet, they were outstanding.
