Harvey Elliott has admitted next summer’s World Cup might force him to consider his Liverpool future. Elliott started just one Premier League game last season, which came after the Reds had already wrapped up the title in a 3-2 defeat to Brighton in May.
The addition of Florian Wirtz, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116m last month, further complicates matters for Elliott, who has been on the fringes since Arne Slot joined as head coach last year and Brighton and Borussia Dortmund were two clubs linked with a move last season.
Lifelong Liverpool fan Elliott says he would ideally stay at his boyhood club for the entirety of his career but speaking after open training at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Thursday, the 22-year-old suggested a spot in next summer’s England squad was near the forefront of his thinking.
Elliott told The Anfield Wrap: “If I had it my way I would be here for the rest of my career, it's as simple as that.
“I love everything about the club, but at the same time I kind of need to be selfish and see what's best for me. I have big ambitions. I want to get in the World Cup squad.
“I want to keep being successful as a player. It's something I still need to review.
I need to have a talk with everyone and review the situation. we have many new players who have come in so whether it blocks the path for me I'm not sure.
"It's something I need to have a look at and decide.”
Elliott added: "This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, if not the biggest. Wherever we go in the world the fanbase is incredible.
They always come out in great numbers and tonight was a prime example of that. For the new players, it's really nice for them to see and excites them even more.
"Endo is a warrior on the training pitch and in the games. He's the first person to throw his body on the line. To have him in the squad is incredible. You feel safe having someone like that behind you. We call him the destroyer!
