Gary Lineker has explained why he believes it is the right time for Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave Liverpool.
The defender confirmed on Monday that he would be leaving his boyhood club on a free transfer in the summer.
The confirmation came after months of speculation that the England international will move to Real Madrid in the summer.
The La Liga giants have long been touted as his likeliest destination.
Alexander-Arnold’s Anfield deal expires officially on June 30, but the Spanish club would like to have him in the squad in time for the Club World Cup.
Liverpool supporters have understandably reacted with mixed responses to the news that Alexander-Arnold will leave the club in the summer.
Lineker, though, believes now is the right time for the 26-year-old to head for pastures new and praised the right-back for having the balls to call time on his Liverpool career.
Lineker said:
“The big stars. Where do they go? They go to Real Madrid or Barcelona.
“I think it is absolutely the right time for him to go. People are blaming him for the fact that they are not going to get a fee for him. But that is not an issue for him.
“If I was looking after a player, I would always tell them to see their contract out. If you are a good player, it puts you in a perfect position.
“Why wouldn’t you finish your contract, as in any other walk of life, and go somewhere else?
“I am chuffed that he has had the balls to do it. Because it is hard to leave Liverpool. It is no one else’s life. It is your life. You do what is right for you.”
The former Everton forward also believes Alexander-Arnold should learn how to speak Spanish.
Lineker
“It will get him respect within the dressing room, within the press and even with the people,”
