Arne Slot praised the mentality of his players

Arne Slot praised the “great mentality” of his Liverpool players as he responded to the show of support from supporters after a memorable Champions League victory.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s penalty two minutes from time earned the Reds a 1-0 win at Inter in Milan on Tuesday evening to breathe new life into their faltering season.

Liverpool went into the game without Mohamed Salah after the winger was left out of the squad following his explosive comments having been benched for a third game in succession at Leeds United at the weekend.

Slot has hailed the manner in which his players made light of the inevitable distraction to extend their recent unbeaten run to four games.

“This was another time where the players showed great mentality, this time we could win it instead of ending it with a draw,”

“It’s all I could ask for. The fourth game in 10 days, which you don’t see a lot in football, three in seven is already a lot.

“With only 13 outfield players available with Champions League and Premier Leagueexperience, after the blow we conceded the 3-3 at Leeds in extra time where we deserved so much more, so to go into this stadium against a strong Inter team, you couldn’t have asked for more.

“I think we deserved to be on the right side but the margins were small.”

The travelling Liverpool support aired their backing for Slot with chants early in the game, which were repeated at length when the Reds boss went to acknowledge the away fans after the final whistle.

And Slot said: “What it means that the fans sing for me, that means a lot. But I said yesterday it’s not about me, it’s about the team and they were there for the team.

“It shows you one more time that if things go against us or there is a hard time, we are all there for each other and we fight for each other and that’s what the fans showed today.”

Liverpool have now moved on to 12 points from their first six Champions League games having responded to their humiliating 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven last time out in the competition.

Their current total makes it likely they will qualify for the knockout stages, which they can make certain with games in the New Year at home to Qarabag and away at Marseille.

“It was mainly for us very important we got a result today,”

The decisive penalty was given after a lengthy VAR check when Alessandro Bastoni was adjudged to have pulled the shirt of substitute Florian Wirtz inside the area.

Liverpool had a goal from Ibrahima Konate contentiously ruled out for handball by Hugo Ekitike in the first half after an even longer check.

And Slot said: “After we had to accept a referee decision that could have gone another way as well, but that has been the story of our season.

“We had a great mentality in the second half, we go better and better and better. We were close to scoring already with Bradley and Ekitike.

“In the end we got a penalty which if it was one was one we could have got 10 times this season.

“I don’t think it would have been given in the Premier League but the disallowed goal was more a clear wrong than the penalty.”
