Arne Slot reveals question he asked Jurgen Klopp

Arne Slot has revealed he has spoken to Jurgen Klopp about why Liverpool fell away from their Premier League title challenge in the second half of last season.

the Reds head coach insists this term cannot be compared to that.

After 21 games last time out under Klopp, Liverpool had a five-point advantage at the top with eventual champions Manchester City having a game in hand

Pep Guardiola's team eventually triumphed as the Reds slipped to third and nine points off the pace.

The tail-off for the Reds came around April time as they ran out of energy and ideas during a period that saw them beaten by Palace at home and Everton before a draw at West Ham.

Slot says one of his early conversations with his predecessor focused on why the dip in form came late in the campaign

Slot said

"It is not something new,"

"I didn’t know about the five points at this [same] stage, but I knew they were better in the first half of the season than the second half.

“So you do talk, not now but in the first half of the season, what are your thoughts on why this has happened?”

"Even the first time or second time I spoke to Jurgen, we spoke about what his opinion was as to why they maybe dipped a bit in the end.

“I don’t think you can compare this season with last season, although there are certain things we have tried to implement already. You are going to ask me what, but I am not going to give you an answer.

"But you know better than me if you can compare last season with this season. I have said this season every single point we had we have deserved and if that was the situation last season as well, well, then being five points [and not winning] is a disappointment.

"But if in the first half of the season there were a few times when it was like, ‘oh, they were a bit lucky over here’, then it is not a surprise that in the second half of the season things change.

"That is not to say things cannot change now because we have to keep on doing the things we do, we must not get injuries and all these kinds of things. All the players are important but there are a few who are a bit more important than others.

"We have a lot to play for but it is difficult to compare seasons with each other because the main thing is we don’t even have to look at ourselves. Look at Manchester City.

“They were five points behind and incredible in the second half of the season. I am happy it is not five between us and City if I saw them playing last week."

Slot added: "[We want] even more consistency in the quality in which we win. I was just talking about the moment when we lost a certain ball. In every second of the game, every single player has to make a choice.

Every second, you have to think: 'I am going to go right or left or play the ball to him'.

“It’s the same when we don’t have the ball. You have to make the right choices and, in the end, they will give us the best possible outcome to improve in every single choice we make.

"This is what we are working on every single day. It’s not that we try to bring something new in all the time.

“No. I am going to show them how hard they worked on five occasions to get back into our 18-yard box when Lille had the ball but there was also one moment when we conceded that we were not sprinting backwards.

"Five out of six is not bad but we are aiming for six out of six. It’s not doing something new. It’s understanding what you have to do to win a game and there will be different things to show.

“They just have to do the things they are good at every single time."
