Arne Slot must listen to Jamie Carragher's Arsenal title statement amid Liverpool slump

Jamie Carragher has warned that Arsenal's outstanding back line could see the Gunners end a 22-year wait for a Premier League title next year.

Arsenal has started the season in ominous fashion, picking up 19 points from a possible 24 in the top flight, and only dropping points to Liverpool and Manchester City.

On Saturday, Arsenal beat Fulham 1-0, recording a fifth clean sheet of the campaign, and Mikel Arteta's side ended the weekend three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

There has been a seven-point swing in Arsenal's favor since Liverpool's 1-0 win over the Gunners at Anfield in August, with Arne Slot's men now sitting third, four points off the top.

Arsenal's defensive record is a big reason for that: while the Gunners have scored just one more goal than Liverpool, they have conceded eight fewer, and Carragher thinks that could prove to be what sets Arsenal apart at the end of the season.

Carragher

"I said a few weeks ago and I won't change my mind on it, if Arsenal are going to win the league, it won't be Gyokeres coming in and making the difference.,"

"That was the big thing at the start of the season, [people saying] that they need this guy up front to score the goals - I never believed that.

"They will win the league by the back four, mainly the two center-backs, the goalkeeper, and maybe Rice in front."

Carragher added: "I keep saying I feel like it's a Jose Mourinho type of team. Arsenal fans feel like it's a criticism - it's not.

“I played against that [Chelsea] team a lot and you very rarely felt like you could score a goal in the game, and that's where I'm at with Arsenal right now. I very rarely feel like they can concede a goal."

Carragher went on to liken Arteta's team to the George Graham Arsenal team of the late 1980s and early 1990s, which was built on a solid defensive foundation.

Carragher said.

"When you think of Arsenal in the Premier League, you think of Wenger, but when you think of the history of the club, George Graham is a massive part of that,"

"Maybe Arteta's team is more aligned with that, than maybe an Arsene Wenger type of team.

“The George Graham team had a famous back four. If Arsenal are going to have success this season and in years to come, I think the back four that they've got now is going to be talked about along the same lines as Lee Dixon, Tony Adams, Steve Bould and Nigel Winterburn.

"What we're seeing now defensively from Arsenal is the reason why they've got a great chance of winning the title this season."
