Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish had a face-to-face meeting with Marc Guehi and his family after he put a halt to the defender's last-minute transfer to Liverpool.

The $47 million deal was called off by Parish in the final moments of the window, even though Guehi had already begun his medical.

The Crystal Palace star was left seething when discussions about his dream move to Liverpool were postponed as Palace manager Oliver Glasner stood firm and threatened to resign if his defender was sold.

According to Sky Sports, Selhurst Park chief Parish decided to stop the deal at 4 pm UK time on Monday.

Liverpool did submit a deal sheet in an attempt to finalize the transfer before the deadline, but Guehi's team were left frustrated as the Palace chairman had some explaining to do.

It was reported that Guehi was contemplating stepping down as the club's captain following a disappointing end to the window.

Glasner had wanted another central defender to join before allowing Guehi to leave, despite his contract having less than a year remaining.

However, this didn't initially seem to hinder progress on a move on the final day of the window.

On deadline day, the south London side did sign a defender, Jaydee Canvot from French side Toulouse.

However, the 19-year-old was not seen as a replacement for the Palace captain, reports the Mirror.

Speaking last weekend, Austrian coach Glasner, who had threatened to resign if Palace offloaded Guehi in the final moments, declared:

Glasner

"We need to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.

"We have an agreement that if we're selling Marc we have the right replacement in. We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season.

"There's no replacement in the building, it's clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled. That means we can't sell Marc.

"It's not a wish or a gift to Oliver Glasner, it's necessary for playing a successful season.

“It's a tempting situation but if we want to progress, we have to keep him. If we sell we accept a step back."

The Reds are anticipated to make a fresh approach for Guehi in January or next summer, when he becomes available on a free transfer.

A farewell video honoring the defender's contributions had already been prepared before his departure was scrapped.

Guehi is presently on international duty with England ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

The 25-year-old will subsequently rejoin Palace as the Premier League resumes for a fixture against Sunderland, where he must face his manager and teammates after being widely expected to depart.
