Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler was left angered by the decision to award Liverpool a penalty during their 3-0 defeat.

The German head coach lamented the spot-kick after Pascal Gross tangled with Mohamed Salah in the penalty area. Referee Stuart Attwell took his time before pointing to the spot and the Egyptian made no mistake as he emphatically fired into the top right corner

The Reds cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup, where they will be ball number one in tomorrow’s (Monday) draw, after goals from Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Salah.

Salah’s penalty rubber-stamped Liverpool’s win but the decision left the visiting manager reeling.

Hurzeler said: “Poor decision. It is difficult to speak [to them] because they are all convinced of their decision but I think it is never ever a penalty.”

Saturday’s 3-0 win means that Arne Slot’s side have won four out of the last five as they continued their pursuit of silverware

They twice had the ball in the back of the net in either half, firstly through Cody Gakpo’s header and then substitute Rio Ngumoha, but both were chalked off for offside.

It was a slow start from Liverpool but they broke the deadlock when Jones flicked home Milos Kerkez’s cross.

The academy graduate was almost left red-faced when his slip allowed Diego Gomez through on goal, however, Alisson Becker was on hand to keep the Paraguayan at bay.

The Brazilian denied Lewis Dunk after the restart and it proved to be decisive as Liverpool went down the other end, doubling their lead through Szoboszlai.

After serving his suspension for the red card against Manchester City, the Hungarian was back in midfield and back among the goals with a superb strike.

Cody Gakpo fired a cross-field ball to Salah, touching the ball into Szoboszlai’s path and he drilled into the top left corner.

The 33-year-old went from provider to goalscorer as the Egyptian added gloss to Liverpool’s win as he dusted himself down to net his sixth goal of the season.

Hurzeler said: “I think moments decided the game today, unfortunately in the wrong direction.

“We started the game well, we controlled the game, we had a lot of good patterns. I think the goal from Liverpool came out of nowhere.

“We reacted well, we had two big chances where we have to score. In the second half the same, one big chance from Lewis [Dunk] then two or three minutes later Liverpool scored with a great goal. These moments decided the game.

“I think there was a difference today. They had the quality to use their chances. We weren't able to be that effective and therefore it's a disappointing result for us.”a
