Gordon Strachan has told Andy Robertson he's leaving Liverpool at the right time given the change that is coming to Anfield.

Robertson will end a nine-year Reds stay this weekend having opted to depart on a free transfer amid interest from a number of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

The 32-year-old, who will skipper Scotland at the World Cup next month and is the present vice-captain of Liverpool, has made 377 appearances for the Reds while helping them sweep the board of major honours.

former Scotland international Strachan has revealed he told Robertson a change of scenery can provide a boost during the latter stages of his career having fallen down the left-back pecking order at Anfield following the arrival last summer of Milos Kerkez.

Strachan

When I was speaking to him, I was trying to explain my feeling when I left Manchester United, where I felt I was losing my influence at the club,"

"There's no doubt about it, and I was losing my influence on the field as well.

"Then, when I went somewhere that I felt I was an influence (Strachan moved to Leeds United when he was 32), and I knew I was an influence from the first couple of weeks, it made me feel fantastic.

“People were listening to me, people wanted to see what I was doing, people were watching me train, people wanted to see how I was as a bloke, as a person.

"That responsibility kicked me on for another three, four or five years. I think that's the type of thing Andy wants now, a place where he knows he has to be an influence. I think Andy would take that on because Andy has that.

"Since he was a kid, Andy has had wonderful humility, which you need to get better and better all the time. Once you have no humility, you think you know everything, and then you're not going to improve."

The arrival of Kerkez was part of a major squad overhaul last year by Liverpool which is likely to be repeated again in the forthcoming transfer window with Mohamed Salah also leaving and doubts over a number of senior squad members.

Strachan added: "It might be a good time for Andy because they'll have to change a few things at Liverpool in the next couple of years with Salah going and I don't know how long Virgil (van Dijk) has got to play at the top level, hopefully a long, long time because we like watching him play football.

"But there seems to be a change coming there, and I think it's best that when you're in that period of change, and you've been there for a long time, it can become a bit confusing and feel uncomfortable."
