Alexis Mac Allister says he was surprised at the ease with which Liverpool won the Premier League this season and has revealed he hopes this is the "beginning of something great".

The Reds clinched a record-equaling 20th league title with four games to go after thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield on April 27.

Prior to the season beginning, though, many predicted that Liverpool would be in for a difficult campaign and would struggle to qualify for the Champions League

But that wasn't to be the case as his successor, Arne Slot, has made light work of his debut season in England and guided Liverpool to a second Premier League title success in five years, with the Reds 15 points clear of nearest challengers Arsenal.

Prior to Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, Liverpool had won 32 of their 34 Premier League games this season, leaving Slot's men on course to tally the third-highest points total in the club's history (94).

And Mac Allister has admitted that such form, which included a first league double over Manchester City in nine years, was surprising given the nature of the changes at Anfield during the off-season.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Mac Allister said: "I didn't feel that we were going to win the league as easily as we did, because we are in a process that is just getting started.

"For many, it was a big change. The coach and the team know that we can continue to improve, and hopefully this is the beginning of something great."

But despite such stellar success for Slot in the Premier League, it was a different story in the Champions League

Mac Allister, though, who helped the Reds to eight wins from 10 in the competition, insists he and his team-mates are already planning to avenge that defeat when they return to the competition next season.

"We were unlucky in the draw, we got a great team,"

"It's hard to say, but we would have loved to have gone further.

“Either team could have reached the semifinals. They were better on penalties, but next year we're going to fight."
