Alexis Mac Allister makes blunt Liverpool admission after Champions League exit

Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that Liverpool have not met expectations this season after their 2-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League ensured that they will finish trophyless.

Arne Slot's side started the campaign as Premier League champions and after spending over £400m on new players, which saw their transfer record broken twice, expectations of another successful season were sky high

But they also saw key players Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz depart for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, respectively, while suffering the unexpected and tragic loss of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota.

The Reds have lost 17 matches across all competitions this season and are currently fifth in the Premier League table, having won fewer than half of their 32 matches played.

Any hopes of winning this season's Champions League were put to bed on Tuesday evening when defending champions PSG won 2-0 at Anfield to secure a 4-0 aggregate victory, ending Liverpool's interest in the competition at the quarterfinal stage.

“It was a different game in the return leg, we were more aggressive, we tried to press, we had our opportunities, but we played against the best team in the world. The result is what it is, and we have to congratulate the opponent."

Having been dumped out of the FA Cup by Manchester City via a 4-0 loss, earlier this month, the Reds have been left to contrate on finishing in the top five of the Premier League, with six matches left to play.

It has been an underwhelming second campaign under head coach Slot, something that Mac Allister acknowledges.

Mac Allister said: “It’s obvious that it was a difficult and challenging season. If you had asked me at the beginning of the season what I expected, I would have said that this team was going to fight and win competitions, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

“We have to keep working, because this year doesn’t do justice to the club. Of course, we remember Diogo Jota, and it was a complicated period, but we can’t use him as an excuse

“I don’t believe that’s why this year was so complicated for us.”

Liverpool do not have long to lick their wounds after their Champions League exit.

On Sunday they will travel across the city to face Everton for the first time at their new waterfront Hill Dickinson Stadium.

David Moyes' side are currently eighth in the Premier League table, five points behind the the Reds.
