Alexander Isak has opened up on the 'scary experience' he endured when he broke his leg against Tottenham Hotspur in December.

Isak was Liverpool’s big money arrival last summer when he joined the club from Newcastle United for £125million.

But the Sweden international has spent the majority of his debut season at Anfieldsidelined due to injury.

The worst of those injuries occurred in December when Isak suffered a serious ankle injury, including a fractured fibula, while scoring in a 2-1 victory against Spurs.

The forward spent four months sidelined before returning to action against Fulham in April.

“It was a pain, it wasn't fun," he said, reflecting on the injury. “I've had some muscle injuries before, but this was my first surgery. A bit of a scary experience.

“It's been a challenge with a lot of rehab. It's the most boring thing in football. Doing a lot of it is not fun. But there have been positive parts too

“The March meeting that we got to watch from the TV couch is a big highlight that has made it possible for me to be here and hopefully have a fantastic summer with everyone.”

But despite missing large chunks of the season, Isak has revealed he will be fit to feature at this summer’s World Cup.

His Sweden side take on Norway and Greece in warm-up games before they get their Group F campaign underway against Tunisia on June 15.

Games against the Netherlands and Japan then follow, and the forward said: "Absolutely, I'm fine. I've had some injury concerns as you know.

"The most important thing is that I'm in good shape for the World Cup premiere. There's a little while left so I can work on that."

Isak made 22 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions this season, scoring four times, and former Real Sociedad team-mate Nacho Monreal believes the former Newcastle man will be back to his best next season.

“Of course, it has been a difficult season for Isak,” he told Rekatochklart. “First of all, he wasn't a part of the pre-season at either Liverpool or Newcastle.

“There were a lot of rumours about him and this kind of situation affects the player. Liverpool paid a lot of money, so they were putting a lot of pressure on Isak as well.

“In the beginning of the season it was really not easy for him and then he got injured. But what he did for Newcastle was amazing, we all know how many goals he scored.

"I think he will be very important for Liverpool in the future. I know, in football we want to see the players perform from day one, but I am 100% sure he will score a lot of goals next season.
