Sam Quek was born in Wirral on October 18, 1988, she attended Birkenhead High School and Calday Grange Grammar. She’s a loyal Liverpool Football Club supporter and considers former Reds striker Ian Rush as one of her heroes.
Sam struck gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics after Team GB beat the Netherlands on penalties - marking the first time the British women’s hockey team had won a gold at the Olympics.
Quek has revealed that comparisons have been drawn between the manner of her team’s victory over the Netherlands – a shootout win after a 3-3 draw – and one of Liverpool’s greatest ever nights. “We’ve had tweets and messages come through saying it was just like Istanbul,” she said. “Someone even tweeted me a picture of Luis Garcia and me [celebrating the respective wins] and it was almost exactly the same, with our arms out. “It was just a stunning way to win and the drama that unfolded that night was a credit to our sport.”
