Jan Molby - calls for Darwin Nunez song change and reveals 'quiet dream' of Cody Gakpo

Jan Molby has placed his confidence in Darwin Nunez to lead the line, believing that the striker knows his quality and plays to those strengths

Nunez would go on to score 15 goals and record four assists in 42 appearances last season

Having played only 14 times this season - half of which were starts - he has bagged seven goals and five assists already.

His latest strike came against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, and epitomised both sides of the striker.

At first he misjudged his control of Trent Alexander-Arnold's pass forwards, then picked up the pieces to whip a shot perfectly over the goalkeeper and under the crossbar.

Reds legend Molby accepts the 24-year-old for all he is.

Molby

"He's quite prepared to say some of the things he does - like the heavy touch in the [Bournemouth] game - 'that's how I play football, and in the end I always get there',"

"If you ask me 'is there more to come?' I don't know. I don't know if there is more to come because what you're saying is you're hoping, and I think we've seen all that. In glimpses he's shown the levels you would like him to get to but I think he's there already.

"He could end the season with 25-30 goal involvements and there would still be people going 'I don't know, is he actually any good or not?' And I think he will say 'I don't care what people think, I will always end up where I want to be', which is scoring and creating goals.

Molby added:

"Is he a false No.9? Is he a Fernando Torres? I don't know what he is, but he is very enjoyable. We don't all have to be same, no mistakes and whatever. They describe him as a chaos footballer but I don't think he views it like that, he 100 percent knows what he's about.

"Cody Gakpo I think has the quiet dream that he would like to be the next Bobby Firmino, yeah? Being able to play that false nine and being able to do all of the things Bobby did. I don't think Darwin Nunez has any aspirations of being anyone other than Darwin Nunez.

"Of course we want our players to be consistent but if he comes away with 30 goals out of a 50-odd games, that's more than one in two isn't it? Those numbers are good for someone who I think won't start 50-odd games in a season.

"Somehow if we can look beyond all of that he just feels right as a footballer. I like what he brings.

"Popularity is a different thing than being on the greatest players list. I can't explain it but off the top of my head I'm thinking Robbie Fowler, Fernando Torres and this boy.

"I think it's pretty simple - people just go away from the stadium and think 'he brings what I want'. I want him to give 100 percent and then I want him to bring me joy, and he does. It's as simple as that."

Finally Molby outlined one last wish, but of the striker, of the club's supporters. Molby cried out: "The only thing he needs is a better song - it's not enough shouting his surname!"
